★★★☆☆ CADET KELLY IS THE BEST MOVIE I’VE EVER SEEN IN MY FRIGGIN LIFE — Disney Channel, But Make It Unhinged

CADET KELLY IS THE BEST MOVIE I’VE EVER SEEN IN MY FRIGGIN LIFE is exactly as unhinged as its title suggests. Crazy, chaotic and gloriously absurd, this is a love letter to a Disney Channel movie that probably didn’t realise it needed this much theatrical analysis.

Ben takes us on a journey through Cadet Kelly, pulling apart the movie piece by piece while throwing in increasingly obscure tidbits, tangents and comedic detours. You don’t so much watch the show as get dragged willingly into Ben’s brain for an hour and it’s a wonderfully strange place to spend some time.

There are moments of genuine comedic genius. The clowning, physical comedy and commitment to absolute absurdity had me laughing throughout, particularly when seemingly throwaway moments suddenly come back around. The full-circle payoffs are some of the strongest parts of the writing, rewarding the audience for buying into the madness from the beginning.

And somehow, underneath all the chaos, there’s a surprising amount of Disney magic. Is it nostalgia? Is it obsession? Is Cadet Kelly secretly one of the defining cinematic achievements of our generation? Ben certainly mounts a compelling, if completely deranged case.

Not every tangent lands with the same precision, and at times the absurdity threatens to overwhelm the structure rather than serve it. But perhaps trying to impose too much order on this show rather misses the point.

Ridiculous, niche and proudly committed to the bit, this is Fringe silliness in its purest form.

If Cadet Kelly occupies even the smallest corner of your childhood memory, report for duty. ★★★☆☆
