A Foot Is Not an Appropriate Prize for the Tombola begins before you’ve really had a chance to decide whether the show has begun. From the moment you walk into the room, you’re kept firmly on your toes, pun absolutely intended.

This solo show initially plays like an amateur local town hall production that has somehow found its way onto the Fringe. There are moments early on that feel awkward, rough around the edges and even slightly unprofessional. I’ll admit it: I questioned some of the choices. Then the story starts to unfold, the pieces click into place, and you realise you’ve been played. I fell for it hook, line and sinker.

To say much more would spoil one of the show’s greatest strengths.

What follows is a clever, modern and surprisingly intricate piece of theatre packed with twists, turns and carefully planted details. As the mysterious foot is revealed, the audience becomes more than spectators. We’re effectively another piece of the set, drawn into the action and helping navigate the clues as the story develops.

The script understands exactly what it’s doing. What initially appears chaotic gradually reveals its design, with theatrical tricks, smart staging and small details elevating what could otherwise be a straightforward solo performance.

Most impressively, the show gets stronger as it progresses. The seemingly questionable choices of the opening become increasingly satisfying, building towards a strong finish that rewards the audience for trusting the journey.

It’s an unusual format, brilliantly committed to its premise and exactly the sort of production the Fringe should make room for. This is one of those shows you simply have to see to understand how it all plays out.
