Baby Lame: Hit Me Baby One More Lame, Britney Has Left the Planet ★★★★☆
There’s a reason Baby Lame: Hit Me Baby One More Lame sits in one of the latest time slots of the evening. This level of ridiculousness probably shouldn’t be allowed out before dark.
If you like Britney Spears, drag, silliness and complete unhinged chaos, this is absolutely the show for you. You get exactly what it says on the label: Britney bangers, space travel, romance, murder and full-throttle pop madness. It’s the Britney saga nobody asked for, but everyone is going to remember.
Set on Planet Louisiana, Baby Lame reincarnates Britney Spears, alongside some surprise guests, in a physical, over-the-top fever dream complete with space skaters, body positivity, C-word chants and the immortal philosophy: quack is whack.
It’s stupid. It’s queer. It’s ridiculous. And it’s hilarious.
Amongst the insanity, though, there is some seriously well-crafted drag. The tech and visuals are exceptionally strong in places, demonstrating that underneath the apparent chaos is a performer who knows exactly what they’re doing.
Then comes Britney classic, Piece of Me, performed as spoken word. I nearly cried laughing.
By the end, you may question whether you’ve witnessed a drag show, experienced a manic fever dream or accidentally taken something significantly stronger than your interval drink. Baby Lame commits to the madness so completely that resistance becomes pointless.
If you’re looking for polished, straight-down-the-line, clean-cut drag, keep walking. This was never designed to be that.
But if you want your late-night Fringe experience to have the same energy as Britney’s infamous knife-dancing Instagram era, completely chaotic, slightly concerning and impossible to look away from, get yourself to Hit Me Baby One More Lame.
Baby Lame is brilliantly bonkers.
★★★★☆ Four stars.
