★★★☆☆ Catching a Cheese Pervert: A Priscilla Patton Mystery
If you like your mysteries cheesy, your comedy slightly naughty and your dairy puns spread on thick, Catching a Cheese Pervert: A Priscilla Patton Mystery certainly commits to the bit.
Built around an absurd cheese-fuelled mystery, the show dives headfirst into the dairy industry and enthusiastically attempts to find the surprisingly fertile comedic ground between cheese, crime and sex. There are some good lines scattered throughout, and when one of the dairy or cheese puns lands, you get a glimpse of the sharper, sillier show hiding underneath.
Unfortunately, those moments aren’t consistent enough.
The story moves slowly in parts, and there are sections where the energy noticeably flattens. The biggest problem is that the writing often tries too hard to manufacture the laugh. Rather than trusting the ridiculousness of the premise, another pun or joke gets layered on top, and sometimes the result is more groan than Gouda.
There are, however, glimmers of something much stronger. The concept is delightfully Fringe, the commitment to the cheese theme is undeniable, and cheese lovers will probably get considerably more mileage from the relentless dairy references.
It’s naughty without becoming completely filthy, ridiculous without entirely losing its mystery structure, and certainly unlike most other shows you’ll stumble into at the Fringe.
Catching a Cheese Pervert might not quite mature into the vintage cheddar it wants to be, but there’s enough here to prevent it becoming a total dairy disaster.
