Flamenc Oh!!: Spanish tradition finds a fresh rhythm
★★★★
There is something immediately impressive about Flamenc Oh!! It has scale, confidence and an unmistakable Spanish heart and soul, filling the big stage with exceptional dancing, powerhouse vocals and completely live music.
At its centre is, of course, the flamenco itself and the skill level is top-notch. The dancers are exceptional, combining precision, passion and personality while still finding room to have fun. A dance-off gives the performers the chance to really flex their abilities, turning the stage into a showcase of extraordinary talent without ever feeling like a simple technical demonstration.
What makes the production particularly successful is its fusion of classic and contemporary Spanish culture. Flamenco is something many audiences will think they have seen before, but this production manages to give it a fresh flavour. It respects the traditions of the form while confidently playing with them, creating something that feels modern without stripping away its authenticity.
The live musicians are just as integral to the experience. The guitarist, in particular, makes their mark, practically wooing the audience through his instrument. At times, it feels as though he isn’t simply playing the guitar, he’s making it talk. It sings its own songs, becoming another voice within the production.
The vocals are equally impressive, adding another layer of richness to an already visually stunning show. There is also plenty of humour threaded throughout, preventing the production from ever becoming overly serious or reverential.
Pure, passionate and packed with exceptional talent, Flamenco takes a traditional Spanish art form and reminds us exactly why it continues to evolve. You may think you’ve seen flamenco before. You haven’t seen it quite like this.
