Glass Child is the kind of physical theatre that grabs hold of you quietly and then refuses to let go.

This beautifully constructed dance duo is raw, emotional and profoundly personal, exploring sibling relationships, disability and the realities of growing up in regional Australia. At its heart is the experience of living alongside a sibling with Down syndrome the love, protectiveness and heartache of watching someone you adore navigate a world that continually treats them differently.

The combination of physical theatre, dance and spoken text is incredibly effective. The movement is visually stunning, with both performers using their bodies to communicate moments that words simply couldn’t. There is a purity to sections of the script that cuts straight through, never feeling manufactured or designed simply to provoke an emotional response.

And Glass Child is brave. Unapologetically so.

There are moments that are genuinely difficult to watch, yet somehow it is impossible to look away. The work doesn’t soften the realities of disability, family or difference for the comfort of its audience. Instead, it invites us into something deeply intimate, demonstrating again and again that sibling bonds can be complicated, painful and extraordinarily powerful.

The score deserves its own recognition. Carefully constructed and compelling, it works alongside the choreography rather than simply sitting behind it, strengthening the emotional weight of the performance.

By the end, I was an emotional wreck. Having spent years connected to children with additional needs through education, parts of Glass Child hit particularly hard.

Raw, courageous and visually beautiful, this is physical theatre with something important to say.
