Heated Rivalry: The Musical Parody starts playing with you before the show has even begun. The music on arrival lulls you into a false sense of security, because once this enormous cast hits the stage, it becomes a fast-paced, gag-a-minute avalanche of camp, music, hockey puns and lots of gay shit.

And yes, it is queer as fuck. If that offends you, this probably isn’t the show for you. For everyone else: strap on your skates.

The vocals are far better than I was expecting from something billing itself primarily as a parody. This isn’t a production hiding behind cheap jokes. The script is solid, the musical theatre references are clever, and the original lyrics consistently hit their targets. Even the songs become jokes in themselves, when you’re getting numbers along the lines of F*#k Him Up the Butt (Metaphorically), you know exactly what kind of evening you’re in for.

There are ice hockey puns flying everywhere, alongside playful digs at the conventions of musical theatre and a parade of modern gay themes sprinkled throughout its take on the now well-known TV phenomenon.

And then there’s the shower scene. Laugh-out-loud ridiculousness.

What really works is that underneath all the silliness, this is a genuinely well-constructed parody. It’s fast-paced without becoming exhausting, and you don’t need to have seen Heated Rivalry to understand the joke or play along. Fans will undoubtedly pick up another layer of references, but newcomers aren’t left sitting on the bench.

Fresh, filthy, camp and completely committed to the bit, Heated Rivalry: The Musical Parody knows precisely what it is and goes for it at full speed.
