Liberace and Liza — A Tribute ★★★★★
Camper Than a Campsite and Twice as Fabulous
Could a show possibly be more gay? Liberace and Liza gives it a damn good try.
From the opening moments, this is hilarious, gloriously over-the-top entertainment with excellent vocals, brilliant musicianship and two performers who understand exactly who they are portraying. Liberace and Liza Minnelli have been given a 2026 makeover, and the result is about as ridiculous, fabulous and outrageously camp as you could hope for.
The characterisation from both performers is exceptional. At times, it genuinely feels as though Liberace and Liza are in the room and let’s be honest, spiritually they pretty much are. If these two had ever come together for a concert, this feels remarkably close to what you might imagine happening.
Liza has the vocal chops to deliver the notes that matter, capturing that unmistakable Minnelli style without allowing the impersonation to overwhelm the music. Meanwhile, Liberace can absolutely tinkle those ivories, bringing the necessary musical skill and flamboyance to make the partnership work.
The setlist also has a few surprises up its sequinned sleeve. Some choices are wonderfully stupid, others delightfully silly, but everything belongs within this particular universe. The puns come thick and fast gay puns, Liza puns, Liberace puns alongside exactly the right amount of theatrical madness.
Importantly, underneath all the sparkle is an exceptionally well-crafted show. Camp only really works at this level when the performers have the talent and precision to control the chaos, and these two absolutely do. There isn’t anything here I would particularly want changed.
If you’re gay, congratulations: your evening plans have been sorted. If you simply love the music and mythology of Liberace or Liza Minnelli, you’re equally well catered for.
Liberace and Liza is camper than a camping ground at the world’s largest arts festival and considerably better dressed.
