Claire Robin: Nun Slut — Holy, Unhinged and Deliciously Irreverent

Claire Robin’s Nun Slut is church skit comedy dragged through the convent, sprinkled with clowning, physical comedy and a generous helping of glorious silliness.
Robin has some of the best facial expressions you’ll see at the Edinburgh Fringe, able to pull a laugh from the audience with little more than a look. From nuns and seminaries to abbeys and evangelical churches, Nun Slut takes familiar religious imagery, rituals and stereotypes and gleefully tears them apart.
The opening takes a little while to find its rhythm. There’s an intentional sense of chaos and uncertainty as Robin establishes the strange world we’ve entered, and on this particular performance the music occasionally felt slightly overpowering, although that may simply have been where I was sitting in the room. Neither detracts significantly from what follows.
Because once Nun Slut hits its stride, it really hits it.
From around the halfway point, the show shifts gears and becomes borderline exceptional, delivering twists that are almost impossible to predict from where the hour begins. Robin’s representations of different corners of Christianity are wickedly accurate, particularly within an Australian context. Anyone who has spent time inside an evangelical church, whether that experience was heavenly or hellish, is likely to recognise more than a few things here. Possibly a little too accurately.
Audience participation features heavily, so if making eye contact with a performer fills you with fear, the back corner might seem like sanctuary. Be warned: even there, salvation is not guaranteed.
Nun Slut is quirky, feel-good, naughty and deeply irreverent. I walked in expecting something completely different from what eventually landed on the offering plate and that unpredictability is one of its greatest strengths.
Among all the religious chaos, there are genuine moments of divinity shining through the darkness.
