Padlocked! — ★★★½

Padlocked! is an intricate, kink-positive solo show that takes the realities of gay hookup culture, adds a set of restraints, and leaves its protagonist with nowhere to hide.

The set immediately establishes the world of the piece, and from there we meet Guy as he prepares for a bondage encounter with a Grindr hookup. What follows is considerably more complicated than the evening he had planned. There is nudity, sex, BDSM and plenty of bottom behaviour, but underneath the provocative premise is a surprisingly reflective story about ageing, loneliness, expectation and what happens emotionally when someone simply doesn’t show up.

Alberts delivers a strong solo performance, confidently holding the stage and maintaining his presence even when the character is physically restricted. That’s no small task. The concept effectively forces the performer to rely on storytelling, character and emotional shifts rather than constant movement.

There are elements of gay male culture here that feel remarkably accurate, particularly for an older generation of gay men. Some younger audiences may not immediately connect with every reference or experience, but perhaps that’s partly the point. Queer history doesn’t begin with dating apps, even if Padlocked! demonstrates that rejection, excuses, no-shows and questionable hookup decisions certainly survived the technological upgrade.

One specifically British reference is Section 28. Introduced in 1988, the legislation prohibited local authorities from “promoting homosexuality” and had a profound impact on how LGBTQ+ lives could be discussed in schools and public institutions. It remained in force in Scotland until 2000 and in England and Wales until 2003.

The script is clever, sex-positive and body-positive without kink-shaming its central character. Its BDSM humour provides plenty of laughs, while Wilhelmina, Guy’s trusty sidekick,is an inspired addition that I’ll leave audiences to discover for themselves.

Where Padlocked! loses some strength is in its pacing. Certain sections could be trimmed to create a tighter dramatic journey, particularly as the central situation is deliberately restrictive. Nevertheless, when the writing turns towards the realities of getting older, the comedy gives way to something considerably sadder. Being stood up isn’t simply an inconvenience here; it becomes the catalyst for disappointment, insecurity and the uncomfortable questions that arrive when the life you imagined collides with the one you’re actually living.

An interesting and provocative piece of queer new writing that knows its kink culture and isn’t embarrassed by it. If you’re looking for late-night Fringe theatre that’s sex-positive, funny and unexpectedly reflective, get yourself tied up with Padlocked! — although perhaps make sure someone actually turns up with the key.
