Walt Unfrozen: When Disney Gets Defrosted ★★★☆☆

Walt Unfrozen begins with a brilliantly bizarre premise: Walt Disney has been cryogenically unfrozen and reintroduced to the modern world. From there, things get weird, very quickly.

Without giving away how the show begins, this is an unexpected collision of theatre, circus, clowning, satire and carefully constructed chaos. At times, you think you know exactly what is happening, only for the production to scramble your brain again. Somehow, amid all the madness, there is the strange sensation that you’ve stepped into a slightly unhinged Disney park experience.

Audience interaction plays a major role, with improvisation and participation driving much of the performance. Be prepared: you may see Walt Disney doing things you never expected or necessarily wanted to see Walt Disney doing.

At the centre of it all is a committed solo performance. The characterisation is strong, the commitment to the bit is impressive, and the performer throws themselves completely into the absurdity of the concept. Maintaining that energy while responding to an unpredictable audience is no small feat.

It’s camp, satirical, clownish, silly and deliberately unhinged. There are moments of genuine cleverness amongst the chaos, particularly in how the production plays with the mythology surrounding Disney and our relationship with the brand.

Walt Unfrozen certainly isn’t conventional Fringe theatre and that is entirely the point. Unexpected, interactive and wonderfully strange, it’s an intriguing three-star trip into a version of the Disney universe you definitely won’t find at the Magic Kingdom.
